Who is William Contreras? | Biography

William Jesús Contreras is a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers. His biography follows a teenage international signing through two championship organizations. He became the 2026 World Series Most Valuable Player after Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays. His contributions included timely hitting, throwing out runners, and successfully challenging disputed pitches. That combination helped the Brewers secure their first championship and brought renewed attention to his development behind the plate.

Born in Puerto Cabello, Contreras entered professional baseball with the Atlanta Braves organization in 2015. His older brother, Willson, had already started building his own professional career. William progressed through Atlanta’s minor league system before making his major league debut in July 2020. He subsequently joined the Braves’ 2021 championship team and became an All-Star in 2022. Milwaukee acquired him during a three-team trade that December, changing his career’s direction.

With the Brewers, Contreras developed into a productive hitter and a more complete catcher. He earned consecutive Silver Slugger Awards in 2023 and 2024. His 2024 performance also secured first-team All-MLB recognition and a fifth-place finish in National League MVP voting. Milwaukee relied on him throughout its successive division-winning seasons. In 2026, he combined another All-Star selection with a championship run featuring substantial responsibilities on both sides of the ball.

Contreras’s personal life also includes his engagement to Níxzali Adames Luna, the sister of fellow major leaguer Willy Adames. Professionally, his 2026 contract carried a reported $9.4 million salary and a conditional option for 2027. His championship year also included Venezuela’s World Baseball Classic title. By October 29, 2026, his achievements connected national-team success, sustained offensive production, and Milwaukee’s historic October breakthrough. However, they entered through different organizations and developed on separate professional timelines. Willson established himself with the Chicago Cubs before William reached Atlanta’s major league roster.

Their shared position made encounters between their teams particularly meaningful. In 2022, their parents attended a game featuring William with Atlanta. The brothers also appeared together at that year’s All-Star festivities.

William Contreras Career | From Atlanta to Milwaukee

William Contreras began his professional career after signing with Atlanta in 2015. He advanced through the organization’s minor league affiliates before debuting on July 24, 2020. His early major league opportunities included the shortened 2020 season and Atlanta’s championship campaign in 2021. By 2022, he had become an All-Star and supplied 20 home runs.

Milwaukee acquired him on December 12, 2022, through a deal involving Atlanta and Oakland. The move gave him a larger role as the Brewers’ primary catcher. He answered with Silver Slugger seasons in 2023 and 2024. His responsibilities expanded beyond offense as Milwaukee emphasized receiving, blocking, and controlling the running game. He remained central to the club’s lineup during its subsequent division titles. In October 2026, his first World Series MVP award capped the Brewers’ first championship, completing his fourth season with Milwaukee.

William Contreras Braves | His First Major League Opportunity

Contreras first reached the majors with an Atlanta organization already employing experienced catching options. That environment meant his early opportunities differed from his later everyday responsibilities in Milwaukee. He contributed as a catcher and designated hitter while establishing his place in the batting order.

His 2022 production demonstrated why another organization would pursue him. He hit .278 with 20 home runs, delivering substantial power without a full everyday catching workload. An All-Star selection expanded his profile beyond prospect discussions. Atlanta nevertheless chose a different long-term catching arrangement when Sean Murphy became available. Contreras left with a championship connection and an established offensive record, rather than an uninterrupted starting role.

William Contreras Trade | How Did the Brewers Acquire Him?

The Brewers acquired William Contreras through a three-team trade with the Braves and Oakland Athletics. Milwaukee also received pitchers Joel Payamps and Justin Yeager. Atlanta obtained catcher Sean Murphy, while Oakland collected five players across the broader transaction. Milwaukee contributed outfielder Esteury Ruiz to Oakland’s return.

The arrangement addressed different organizational priorities. Atlanta pursued Murphy’s established catching profile, while Milwaukee obtained a younger offensive contributor under extended team control. Contreras had already shown major league power, but his receiving still offered room for improvement. Milwaukee’s subsequent results made that development central to the trade’s significance.

William Contreras Catching | How Did His Defense Improve?

Contreras improved his catching after joining Milwaukee, with receiving and blocking becoming important parts of his development. FanGraphs documented substantial defensive changes during his first Brewers season. His adjustments included working beneath pitches and presenting them with a quieter glove. Those techniques helped him receive pitches more effectively around the strike zone.

In Milwaukee, Contreras’s catching responsibilities accompanied a demanding offensive workload. His 2026 World Series performance demonstrated that expanded role. He contributed through his throwing and pitch challenges as well as his bat. Championship coverage consequently emphasized his complete catching performance alongside his offense.

William Contreras Awards | All-Star and Silver Slugger Recognition

William Contreras’s notable individual honors include All-Star selections and two consecutive Silver Slugger Awards. The Silver Sluggers recognized his offensive production in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, he batted .281 with 23 home runs and 92 runs batted in. He appeared in 155 games, illustrating the workload accompanying his place in Milwaukee’s lineup.

That season brought additional recognition beyond his position’s offensive award. He earned first-team All-MLB honors and finished fifth in National League MVP voting. His All-Star selections came in 2022, 2024, and 2026. The first belonged to his Atlanta period, while the later appearances represented Milwaukee. His 2026 World Series MVP added postseason recognition to that regular-season record.

William Contreras 2026 Stats | His Championship Season

Contreras finished the 2026 regular season with a .270 batting average, 18 home runs, and 94 RBI. His official statistical record lists 153 hits in 566 at-bats. He scored 82 runs and posted a .341 on-base percentage. Those figures describe his regular season, separate from his subsequent postseason performances.

October brought a different set of contributions against successive opponents. He hit .444 against San Diego in the National League Division Series, including two home runs. Against Los Angeles in the Championship Series, he batted .357 with another home run. That production helped Milwaukee advance to the World Series. His final series then added defensive contributions that became central to the MVP discussion.

William Contreras World Series MVP | Why Did He Win?

William Contreras won the 2026 World Series MVP after producing eight hits in 21 at-bats against Tampa Bay. His .381 average accompanied four RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and a stolen base. He did not need a home run to shape the series. His offense repeatedly supported Milwaukee while his catching affected the Rays’ opportunities.

Contreras threw out four runners during the series and recorded ten successful automated strike-zone challenges. Those overturned calls added measurable value behind the plate. Milwaukee clinched the championship with a 4–1 Game 5 victory on October 28. The Brewers won the series four games to one. For Contreras, the award distinguished his central role in this championship from his earlier Atlanta ring. For Milwaukee, his performance helped finish a postseason that delivered the franchise’s first World Series title.

William Contreras Venezuela | World Baseball Classic Success

William Contreras also became a World Baseball Classic champion with Venezuela in March 2026. His national-team participation added an international achievement before Milwaukee’s championship run. However, Venezuela’s victory did not reflect a productive individual hitting tournament for him. He went hitless in 13 at-bats during the competition.

Contreras’s strongest October performances came months after his difficult World Baseball Classic batting results. By the year’s end, his record included national-team success and a World Series MVP. Those achievements belong to separate tournaments with different opponents, teammates, and individual performances.

William Contreras Contract and Salary

William Contreras’s reported 2026 salary is $9.4 million under a one-year agreement reached in February. The deal avoided a scheduled arbitration hearing. Reporting also identified a $14.5 million club option for 2027. That option converts to a mutual option if he finishes fourth or better in 2026 National League MVP voting.

The Brewers did not publicly confirm the financial terms. The option should therefore remain described as reported and conditional. Winning World Series MVP does not itself establish his National League MVP voting position. The agreement’s annual salary also differs from a guaranteed multiyear extension covering every possible option season.
